Sheryl,
I took Ali to the vet for her check today. I am proud to say that he thought that she was a "beautiful specimen"!! He was very impressed by how mellow she was throughout the exam - even during the "nail filing" she was calm - and the few times that she did try to walk away, I would just cup my hand under her chin and stroke her talking calmly, and she would mellow right down!! She weighed in at 9 pounds (I'm
sure he was rounding the weight) how much did she weigh when you weighed her for shipping? Has she lost weight since then or about the same?
The vet did a thorough check - felt her belly well (no eggs that he could feel...) listened to her heart and looked in her mouth. He informed me that I had the best iguana he's seen not just for health, but for temperament too!!
She eats great and goes poop every other day (goes in the tub or gets down and goes into the kitchen to go on the linoleum - good girl!!!). It was a bit soft today, but the vet trip probably stressed her a bit.
I still can't thank you enough!!! I will scan you a picture when I get the roll developed so you can see if her color looks good to you. Her head is shedding and the color underneath is beautiful!!!
I was a bit concerned about dehydration because the skin on her sides kinda pinches together when she walks, but she gets a bath every other day at the least and pees a ton when she goes, so I imagine that she is getting enough water in her diet & when she drinks in the bath. I had read about occasionally putting wheat bread in the salad as a treat and to put some weight on a skinnier ig - what is your opinion on this? Well, sorry for the long post....
Take care,
C

Hi Sheryl!
She's here! Not the happiest skink inthe world but fine:)
I checked this morning w/ the airline and they told me that the plane
was comming in at 3:20!
Then they called my home at 9:45 to let me know that she was there and
early! She was in the pilot's lounge. hahah.
She's happily eating some Mighty Dog now with her new buddy. He
seemed confused at the start, but now they are cuddling.
I stopped at the vet and they had time to quick look her over. She was
pronounced "great!". Dr Hansom is now proud to have 2 Blue tongues under
his care.
I must say, she's much blacker than mine. Mine is a blue-grey with
broad stripes and yellow spots.
We all thank you so very much for all you've done. I'm very glad
there are people and organiztions like yourself to look after our scaley
buddies:) If I can ever help in the future, please let me know.
Beth
Hi Sheryl,
Wow! I thought I had seen some pretty good reptile sites, but you
truly take the prize! It's that kind of effort that makes me realize
that there are still honest people out there who know how to treat
animals. I was not aware you authored books, that's great! I am not a
"lizard guy", but I do own a large Water Monitor, varanus salvator. I
liked your party photos, you seem to care a lot about people and
educating them about reptiles. You have obviously put major work into
your website and you should be very proud. Keep up the good work!!!

Just wanted to thank you for bringing the two turtles that you rescued
in to our lives. They arrived today, and they are swimming happily in
our little pond and eating well. We will love them as you did and are
so happy that we found you through the web. The article in Viewzone was
excellent and I only wished you lived in New Jersey so you could visit
some of our schools.
Thank you,

I think it's great that you take the time and money to do
extensive surgery and medicating of sick pythons, most people don't
even take them to a vet! I have spent countless dollars on vet bills,
but every time I have to deal with a new illness, I make sure to
learn how or if I can prevent it, and treat it on my own. As far as
shipping large snakes, I've only had a couple that had to be put in
large wooden crates. Most snakes up to 12 feet will fit into a large
styrofoam box, (with holes), and then shipped in a heavy cardboard
box. I've shipped with 100% success through Continental, and United.
Both of them mark the animal "Live Harmless Reptile", and they seem
to always tell me that they made sure it was warm while it waited to
be picked up.
I am very interested in the 9 ft male Albino Burmese, that would
be easy to ship as it is not a giant yet. Please give me the details,
and we can set up shipping arrangements. I am in Oklahoma City, and
shipping would need to be to Will Rogers World Airport. Unless you
could find someone to send it to my door. It has been extremely warm
here...(every day for the last month has been in the 70's), amazing
for this time of year. So shipping the burm now is best. Let me know,
ASAP.
Thanks. Paul

I just read your page on iguanas, and thought you might be interested in
the following.
When my husband and I were first dating, I wanted badly to get him a pet.
Since he still lived with his parents, the typical dog or cat was out of
the question. We visited a local pet store on the advice of a friend.
They had baby iguanas on sale for $7.99. Since I had seen adult iguanas
for in the hundres of dollars, we thought this a great deal. We discussed
buying one. We picked one out and had the pet store clerk fetch him out
for us. We were estatic. Since we already had a ten gallon aquarium, we
started looking for other things we might need. The clerk noticed us, and,
fortunately for the poor little iguana, intervened.
"You guys ever had an iguana before?"
"No," Bill answered. "My sister had one for awhile, but it died."
"Do you have the proper equipment?"
We confessed we didn't know what the proper equipment was. He proceeded to
show us lights, supplements, etc that we would need. I couldn't believe
how expensive it all was. Bill and I looked at each other in panic. His
sister had just kept hers in an aquarium with a screen and fed it lettuce
and carrots! No wonder it had died!
The clerk finally took pity on us. "Iguanas are not as low-maintenence as
people try to tell you. They have close to an 80% mortality rate, just
because people don't know how to care for them. Why don't you check out
some books, buy the right equipment, and then come back? I'm sure we'll
still have some babies."
We decided on a rat for a pet that day, but I have never forgotten that
store clerk. He actually lost a sale because of his compassion. If only
more could be like him!

I really cannot believe the ignorance of people.
We recently moved to Oklahoma City from Virginia Beach, and at that time,
there was a komodo dragon loose in Virginia Beach area. (well, with all
the media contradictions, I THINK it was a dragon...some said it was a
monitor...) They called it GODZILLA, and warned parents to watch their
children at all times or this dangerous beast would eat them. The poor
thing, it was someone's pet, and I'm sure it was starving and scared at
being in the "wild". People were talking about shooting on sight, etc.
What a mess!
I think it relates to the occurance in my hometown in some way. In
Winston-Salem, NC, a man left his two Rottweilers for two weeks by
themselves. He left food, but of course they pigged that down the second
day, and no one to check on them. Towards the end of their torture, they
broke loose, and, ravenous, attacked and killed a small child and a jogger.
Of course, since the were familiar mammals, the owner received 2 charges
of 2nd degree murder and was put away, since it was his fault the dogs were
hungry. But if this had happened to a reptile, it would have been because
it was a "dangerous" monster, not a family pet gone wild. There are so
many double standards.
Once again, I have to commend you on your rescue. I am in such awe of your
love and compassion, and plan to financially support you further in the
future as a token of my appreciation.
J.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We had a blast today. You did a super job at the birthday party.
I just viewed your website and I am so impressed with your efforts. I am looking to build or buy a larger cage for our beloved Bubba. Do you have any ideas? I would appreciate any input.

Hi Sheryl,
Wanted to let you know I got the Iguana home last night and she loves her new cage. she already explored the room she is going to be in. And she ate a huge breakfast this morning. She's going to be great addition to my family. If in the future you get a bearded dragon in let me know I would love to have
one.
Thanks B. G.

Sheryl,
It was nice meeting you, your son, and all your babies.
It's funny, I cried all the way home last night.
I think it was the snake with it's vertebrae exposed - that really got me.
I had this overwhelming sadness, so many of these poor animals
are going into homes where people don't know how to care for them
and it truly ends in an
abusive situation.
I'm glad that your out there to help where you can.
I'm certain you will either find or provide a good home for Iris.
Much gratitude
Jennifer

Greetings Sheryl,
I got to compliment you on a wonderful webpage! It is so informative, and educational and so you are so right about what happens to some of those unfortunate pets. You almost made me cry with the pictures in the "Hall of shame". How anyone can be so cruel to their pets it's beyond my comprehension.
I am very glad to have met you, and know that there is such a wonderful "rescue" person out there helping these unfortunate critters. God bless you.
Take care,
Christine

Hi Sheryl,
Thank you for your reply so fast. I went back and read your contract and
also more about your rescue operation. I am one of those people who can
never say no to an animal and often rescue any animal in trouble. Your
organization is great! Please email me a list of items that you need and if
I come across them at a good price or as a give a way I will get them and
donate them to you. Let me know about food you need also. When we can, we
will try to send food to you.
I have three adult beards now. Two females and one male. I would perfer to
have females but if any one needs a home I would not say no. We have also
had babies. It is so hard for me to get rid of them because I get so
attached. We have a couple that are called " imperfects" because of tails
being nipped or one has a hump and one got his little leg bitten. It got
infected and we had to have it amputated. where most people would kill these
misfits, we have found happy homes for them. We are keeping the amputeed
since I am too attached to it to let him go.
Please keep us in mind in you get any unwanted, deformed, sick dragons. I
dont mind nuturing anyone back to health either.
My husband wants a red tailed boa, so I think instead of buying one at
the show we just might have him check out any you may have when we are
ready.
Again I would just like to say I am so glad you are out there. It angers me
that people buy these animals on impulse and don't find out the care,
growth, breeding of them. I also blame the pet stores. The xxxx mall is
guilty of killing and abusing many reptiles. There staff does not know how
to care for many of there reptiles and many I have seen have been ill and
dying. I tried getting them to give me a beared that was so malnurished and
emaciated. It was dying on my hand! They would not give it to me nor let me
speak with the owner. They did call the owner and he said to just throw it
in the back! I go in there every once in a while but it kills me to see the
condition of there reptiles.
I saw you do parties, that is great to know! I would like more information
on that. I am an Event Planner and am alway looking for new people and
idea's. Please check out our web site www.windshell.com We are still adding
more stuff so excuse our dust.
Take care and it was great finding your website!
