Reptile Owners Hall of Shame

Reptile Hall of Shame
Not For The Faint Of Heart

This page is to show some of the "worst of the worst case"
rescues that come in to us for care!

This is a 4 ft Burmese python that had been to 3 different Veterinarians for treatment of a "Prolapsed Hemipene" None of these vets had experience treating reptiles. This snake was in fact a Female not a Male! The tissue protruding from her rectum was bowel!
PLEASE have a qualified Veterinarian available who knows reptiles before you get a reptile as a pet! If the prescribed treatment does not work, return to the same vet. He knows more about your pet and can try other things should the first treatment fail.
Had this not been allowed to go for so long, she could have been saved.
Prolapses of the bowel can have many potential causes including dehydration, improper temperatures, parasites, bacterial infections, or genetic weakness.

Phoenix was an Iguana that came to the rescue from Animal Control after being burned in a house fire? She was here for 6 months healing before going to a school for handicapped children where she is a daily reminder for their fire safety project.

# RIG3910800
"Quazi Moto"
I was turned in to the rescue Aug. 31, 2000 after being captured by a local animal control agency. The best guess was that I was too ugly and ill tempered to be sold or given away and was turned loose to fend for her-self. I am an adult female of unknown age that apparently had recovered from a severe case of MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) Generally this condition is caused by a poor diet and improper lighting.

This is Pebbles, He is a hybred tortise, he was turned in to the rescue by a local pet store where he was abandoned after the owner could not find anyone to buy him. He had been kept in an aquarium without UVB Lighting and had been fed a diet of Iceburg and leaf lettuce! His shell was so soft when he arrived here that when you picked him up he felt like a water balloon moulding to your hands. After nearly a year of rehab he found a permanant loving home with someone who understood this wonderful tortise.

BOGIE
He came to the rescue on Jan. 17, 2002 after being turned into animal control. Reportedly, he was found in a school classroom, no one knew how he got there. The first examination of him revieled where the vet at animal control had sprayed him with a preperation to stop bleeding, he had 4 vertabre fully exposed as well as the tops of several ribs. The entire open area measured 3 inches wide by 5 inches long. How the area was initally damaged was not immeadiatly apparent.
After a couple of weeks of wound care it became obvious that the damage was caused by an extensive thermal burn, probally caused by a heat lamp that was too close to the top of the cage. This is of course speculation. It became clearly evident that there was an extensive amount of damaged skin and we were concerned that he may have suffered deep tissue damage, in the form of burns on his Lungs, since we did not know how deep the actual damage went.
On March 15th he had his first surgical debridement.
Not all the dead tissue was removed, it was felt that the damage may be too deep and by removing all the dead tissue we might expose internal organs.
these are the pictures of the wound after the first wound care treatment done on 3/21/02.
He lost the battle on 3/28/02.

During one of his dressing changes it was noted that the dead skin was seperating. This seperation unfortunalty did expose his abdominal contents to air, the wound was too extensive to close due to the relative lack of viable tissue, we taped him up and called the vet. By the time we were able arrange for him to go to the clinic he had expired.
Everyone here at the rescue were deeply saddened by his loss.
